Lose Weight with Fucoxanthin (Seaweed!)

Looking for a way to supplement your weight loss without getting the jitters? Try Fucoxanthin.
What Is Fucoxanthin?
This natural compound derived from brown seaweed helps you burn fat through thermogenesis (the body’s production of heat), so in essence Fucoxanthin is actually helping you burn fat and lose weight more quickly than just diet and exercise alone. White adipose tissue makes up visceral fat or “belly” fat. This antioxidant-like compound also reduces free radicals in the body.
Hate the Weight Loss Pill Jitters?
The best part about this fat-burning Asian food seasoning is that it won’t leave you feeling shaky or sleepless because Fucoxanthin doesn’t stimulate the central nervous system. Fucoxanthin or the brown pigment found in several types of seaweed is used in the conversion of light to energy (photosynthesis) as well as in flavoring dishes such as Japanese miso soup. This fat busting compound is not as concentrated in green or red seaweed, which is a very common component in Asian cooking.
The Science
In a clinical study released in 2006, Fucoxanthin was found to reduce the weight of test animals by 5 to 10 percent. According to the study, the test group of more than 200 rats and mice lost the most fat in the abdominal area. This was attributed to one of the two ways Fucoxanthin fights fat – through a protein called UCP1. This protein is predominately located in the abdominal region. The compound causes the UPC1 to oxidize the fat.
A second study that included 110 overweight individuals showed positive preliminary results. The average study participant lost an average of 14.5 pounds compared to the 11.5 pounds of the placebo group over 16 weeks. The trial group was given a supplement that included Fucoxanthin, and was put on an 1,800-calorie diet. The control group only participated in the diet plan.
Real Scientific Results
- The animal study showed positive results in belly fat reduction.
- The human study showed a 450 greater weight loss with Fucoxanthin than with diet alone.
- The females in the second study showed an average increase of 18.2 percent metabolic rate.
More Health Benefits...
1) Fucoxanthin reduces “bad” cholesterol.
- The seaweed extract causes the liver to produce an omega-3 fat called DHA. This healthy fat reduces the body’s levels of low-density lipoprotein or LDL “bad” cholesterol. High LDL levels contribute to obesity and heart disease.
- Fucoxanthin binds very tightly to the LDL protein, so when the whole seaweed plant is consumed and absorbed into the body the Fucoxanthin does not absorb well. The study shows that the extract renders a stronger result. So, according to the research, eating large portions of brown seaweed or drinking large amounts of miso soup will not get you real results.
2) Reduce triglycerides and your risk for heart disease and high blood pressure.
- DHA produced by Fucoxanthin also reduces triglycerides, another artery-clogging component of cholesterol.
3) Stabilize your blood sugar and regulate insulin levels with Fucoxanthin.
- The same healthy fat DHA has been found to reduce insulin and blood sugar levels in animal studies.
No Side Effects
Fucoxanthin studies have shown no side effects to date. Since it does not affect the central nervous system, taking it as a dietary aid will not increase heart rate or make blood pressure levels irregular.
Get Results
Real results come from taking the Fucoxanthin as part of a diet supplement which you can buy in some health food stores and online. Combine this effort with a healthy diet and exercise for best results.

Much is made about the benefits of an authentic Asian diet which consists mostly of vegetables and grain. Soy gets a lot of attention, but more and more, people are realizing the benefits of seaweed, which constitutes about 10 percent of the Japanese diet. Aside from the high levels of essential vitamins and minerals found in edible seaweed, on-going studies are revealing other potential benefits of consuming brown algae. Fucoxanthin is one such element currently being explored.
